How To Play a Ryder Cup Format

IT’S RYDER CUP WEEK! so, you’ll learn here how to play a Ryder Cup Format in TheGrint.

Ryder Cup is a unique event in the golfing world thanks to the incredible atmosphere you feel from the crowd.

In large part, it comes from the fact that is one of the few moments when fans root for THEIR team in this epic battle between the best 12 golfers of the USA and the 12 best golfers from Europe. It’s well known that the first tee at the Ryders Cup is one of the best experiences in the world for golf fans and players.

Another interesting angle is that  pro golfers who are used to play individually, are now part of a team!

How to Play a Ryder Cup Format in TheGrint

1- After tapping the PLAY icon on your home screen, you’ll need to tap the “JOIN/CREATE a LEADERBOARD”, followed by “CREATE A LIVE LEADERBOARD”

2- Three options will appear for the type of competition. Tap the RYDER option.

3- SET UP SCREEN: Here, you’ll get to customize your competition with the name of your Cup, a password for the players who are joining, and team names. If you don’t choose team names, the app will automatically set them as “Blue” and “Red” team.

Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to edit the scoring format between NET and GROSS, and also decide whether you want to allow players to edit their handicap. Finally, select the stroke format between USGA or the MODIFIED option.

4- After setting these, tap on CREATE and you’ll be taken to a screen to finish the process. Here, you’ll choose the number of sessions, the course you’ll be playing at, and finally the match play format.

Formats are either 2-man teams or individual. For 2 man formats include fourball (also known as Best Ball), foursome a(also known as Alternate), and Scramble (we added this option for fun). For individual matches competition is decided with regular best ball format.

That’s it! Your very own Ryder Cup is ready to go! Player’s will be able to join using the password and each will choose the team they’ll be representing.

Having that said, enjoy your golf!

Setting it up is easy… using it is not. We had a 16 guy even two weekends ago. We got everyone in the app, but I was only able to configure 1 match. How do you get 4 matches going per session? How do you move people around? It would be nice if the creator of the event had full editing capabilities. We were all set to use the Grint and had to bail on it because we couldn’t get more than one match going. Walking us through the rest of the process would be appreciated.

    • Hi Brandon. We are working on giving the Organizer the ability to setup all the foursomes himself/herself before the Sessions. However, for now, when you Join the Ryder Cup and have everything setup (Sessions), you will choose your Teammate and the other Teams’ players. You can track up to 4 scores per Phone.
Give your Friends the Name and Password of the Cup you created.
Then they can Join from their Phones and accounts and track their Team Scores using their own Phones. You will all see each others’ scores live as you all play the Sessions/Rounds.

It looks like this can only be made for a group of 4. Are you able to make this/set it up for a group of 16 people?

    • Hi Mitchell. Yes. You can. When you Join the Ryder Cup and have everything setup (Sessions), you will choose your Teammate and the other Teams’ players. You can track up to 4 scores per Phone.
Give your Friends the Name and Password of the Cup you created.
Then they can Join from their Phones and accounts and track their Team Scores using their own Phones. You will all see each others’ scores live as you all play the Sessions/Rounds.

Can you only setup Ryder cup mode with 12 golfers? 6v6 with 2 man scramble teams?

    • Hi Samuel. No. You can setup Ryder Cup with as many golfers as you want.

I seem to be able to get the base game set up but how do you set up all the foursomes for each of the matches/rounds?

    • Hi Ross. You can’t setup the foursomes yourself.

I am looking at Ryder Cup format and don’t see how to add all six player for each team. I am looking to set up 3 day event with six players on each squad. We are planning a golf trip and want to use Ryder Cup format. I read your recent article, but it doesn’t explain adding all the players and how to create each two man match.

    Thanks,

    MJC

    • Hi Michael. Here is a little explanation on how to set it up:

Create the Name of the Ryder and Password, then choose the Handicaps and Stroke formats.

Then on the next screen you setup the Sessions/Rounds.

Then on each Session, select the Course, Tees and how many holes. Then tap on “Select Match Format”. Choose the format you prefer for each Session/Round.

After you set all of them, tap on Next on the top right. Then tap on Create. Then if you are playing Session 1 that day, tap on the Session you see on the next screen. If you are not playing that same day you created the Cup, the day of the Event, go to Join on the App Live Leaderboards. Search for your Cup, enter the Password and Join the Session you are going to play.

When you Join, you will choose your Teammate and the other Teams’ players. You can track up to 4 scores per Phone.
Give your Friends the Name and Password of the Cup you created.
Then they can Join from their Phones and accounts and track their Team Scores using their own Phones. You will all see each others’ scores live as you all play the Sessions/Rounds.

So we’re playing in our own Ryder cup which will be 5 groups of 2 man teams of scramble but we’re just doing gross with no handicaps. But every time I set it up it says to put in a handicaps to give us strokes. Will these strokes just not count because I did gross?

Another question – can I edit any of the settings after setup? ie change tees or teams names, etc? Also since I’ve been playing around with it can I delete one I created? Thanks

Also as another follow up is it using the USGA formulas for formats like scramble and alt shot?
